I remember this question all too well and the embarrassment I felt about the answer.

To this day, I can still remember the first time I was asked that question.

It was about six months after I started my coaching business as a career coach.

I was at a local networking event, sitting around a table at a Panera Bread with about 8 other business owners. We were going around the table introducing ourselves. I had just given my elevator pitch and the woman across from me asked that dreaded question…

I had been working so hard for the past six months. Doing everything I could to get clients.

Sending out letters to divorce lawyers thinking their clients might need my services.

Learning everything I could about how to grow a coaching business.

And what did I have to show for it?

One client.

One client paying me $50 a month.

And she didn’t even come to me through all of my marketing and networking efforts.

She was someone I had known previously, so I couldn’t even say that all my hard work was paying off.
