Have you ever found yourself brimming with so many ideas—whether it's a new course, content plans, or even a book—that you end up overwhelmed and not seeing much progress on any of them?
If so, you're not alone.
Many of us, myself included, have faced the challenge of shiny object syndrome, where the allure of new ideas distracts us from our existing projects.
For business owners and especially coaches, this can be a persistent issue.
Spending too much time juggling multiple projects often results in minimal progress. The excitement of starting something new is fleeting if it leads to neglect of ongoing tasks. Consequently, many among us end up not advancing as far as we'd like.
Enter the one project approach by Joshua Becker—a concept that radically changed how I manage my workload and projects. The simplicity is its genius: maintain your current workload while committing to just one new project at a time. This singular focus enables achievements like writing books, creating apps, and founding nonprofits—all of which Joshua has accomplished using this method.
This approach helps achieve a balance between managing ongoing business tasks and satisfying the desire for innovation. By integrating a new project into your routine, you keep your business fresh without disrupting your established operations. The key here is to not overload yourself, as maintaining fun and an element of "doability" in your projects is crucial.
Maintain Consistency: Keep up with your daily and weekly routines of your existing workload.
Focus on One Goal: Dedicate your energy to one significant-new project at a time.
Build Systems: Once the project is completed, create systems to sustain it within your current workflow.
Streamline Before Starting: Before diving into a new project, focus on streamlining your current routines and systems to free up time and energy.
For example, I’m focusing on optimizing my content creation. My goal is to develop a harmonious workflow that balances in-depth content with short, actionable tips. Here's how I'll implement this strategy:
Evaluate and Streamline: Analyze existing routines, identifying areas for improvement.
Make Streamlining the Core Project: Until I optimize fully, streamlining remains my chief focus.
Decide Future Projects: Once I have a manageable schedule, I’ll consider new projects based on current inspiration.
Commit to the Project: Devote time to one project diligently, ensuring steady progress without distraction.
Integrate Seamlessly: On completing the project, I’ll develop systems to integrate it smoothly into my regular workflow.
Repeat the Process
Doesn’t this approach sound appealing? I encourage you to try it out and tell me how it works for you. What will be your first project?
