Setting the record straight

Setting the record straight

A few days ago, I was talking with a friend who’s been struggling to find new clients.

She’s a very smart and accomplished woman. She’d led a very successful career working her way up the ladder in a well-known Fortune 500 company.

And then she left her corporate career to go off on her own and start her own consulting business.

In our conversation, we discussed the different ways she could market her business.

Except…

After I laid out all the different options and highlighted the ones I thought would be perfect based on her strengths and personality…

She looked at me and said:

“I don’t want to do any of these.”

Umm…

🤷‍♀️

And this got me thinking about all the times I’ve talked with coaches who say they didn’t like marketing. Or they don’t like some other areas of building a business.

Maybe you’ve had similar thoughts.

So, I’d like to get a little real with you.

Many coaches believe that having a coaching business is easy. Some even chose coaching because they thought it would be easy.

I’m going to tell you right now…

It’s not easy.

It’s one of those things that can be simple, but not easy.

And that’s okay.

Because from what I’ve seen, the best things in life… the things that have meaning… They aren’t always easy. They challenge us.

Parenting, for example.

Not always easy.

But worth it.

Or maybe it’s a transformation you’ve gone through that you now want to help others with.

I’m guessing it wasn’t easy.

But I bet it was worth it!

Building a business requires a lot of things from us...

  • Stepping outside our comfort zone
  • Putting ourselves out there
  • Starting conversations, whether online or off
  • Learning how to market and sell
  • Improving our coaching day in and day out
  • Being there for our clients
  • Figuring out tech stuff
  • And much, much more…

So if you’ve been struggling to find clients and wishing it was easier…

Here’s what I suggest:

First, take a look at where you could simplify things.

Is there any place in your business that feels way too complicated? Where you feel like you’re doing ALL. THE. THINGS?

Look for the sweet spot between your genius (what you’re naturally good at and what you enjoy doing) and what’s needed to attract clients.

Sometimes coaches have a tendency to try and do too much, when they don’t need to.

Instead, focus on the activities in that sweet spot.

Second, let go of needing this to be easy.

Know that it isn’t going to be a complete breeze to build your business.

You will face challenges. And that’s a good thing. Because you’re going to love who you become on the other side.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I willing to do what’s necessary to build a successful coaching practice?
  • Am I willing to put myself out there so I can attract my ideal clients?
  • Am I willing to learn what I need to learn to be successful?

If so, excellent!

That means you’re ready to do this.

So take a look at the things you could do to make it easier.

What books could you read?

What courses could you take?

What mentors can you find?

The reality is, we’re not born with all the knowledge we need to build a business.

Getting help from the people who have already been through the trenches is a great way to make things simpler, easier, and faster.

And if I can be that person for you, I’d love to help you.
