Today, I want to unpack something that could completely transform the way you approach reaching your goals—both in your personal life and your coaching or consulting business.
Let’s kick things off with a powerful quote from James Clear’s Atomic Habits:
“Most people think they lack motivation when they really lack clarity.”
Now, take a moment to let that sink in. I’m going to repeat it because when you really get this, it changes everything:
“Most people think they lack motivation when they really lack clarity.”
Doesn’t that hit home? When I reflect on the times in my life where I’ve been absolutely on fire, I can tell you this: I was crystal clear about what I wanted and how I was going to get it.
My Kick-Ass Moments (and the Not-So-Great Ones)
When I think back to my time earning my master’s and PhD, everything felt so structured and laid out. I knew exactly which classes I needed to take, the steps required for practicums, internships, teaching experiences—you name it. Every part of the journey was clear. And guess what? I crushed it.
Contrast that with my experience tackling my dissertation. For months, I procrastinated and felt completely unmotivated.
Why?
Because I couldn’t nail down a topic that felt right. I was spinning my wheels, stuck in a lack of clarity. But as soon as I settled on the right idea and got the green light from my advisor, everything changed. Like flipping a switch, I went from stagnant to supercharged.
Now, think about your own life.
When were those moments where you were kicking ass, taking names, and making progress? Weren’t those the times when you were laser-focused and clear about what you wanted?
And on the flip side, those periods of procrastination and stuck-ness—do you think they might have been because you just weren’t sure of your next step?
Why Clarity Is the Key to Progress
This realization about clarity is why I began offering Coach Action Plan Calls. In my years of working with coaches, I saw a common theme: people feeling stuck.
It didn’t matter whether they were just starting their business and unsure of their first steps or if they’d already made progress but hit a plateau they couldn’t break through. Lack of clarity was the culprit every single time.
I’ve had clients who were stuck for years before working with me, and the moment things started clicking was when they got clear on their goals and best next steps. Once you have that clarity, your motivation kicks in—and that’s where the magic happens.

Why Clarity Is Every Coach’s Superpower
So here’s the thing: this isn’t just great for you personally—it’s also a game-changer for your clients.
As coaches and consultants, helping clients get clarity is at the heart of what we do. We’re helping them with:
The majority of our work centers around helping clients see clearly. Let’s take a look at a few examples to make this real.
Example 1: Leadership Coaching
Let’s say you work with women in the corporate world who want to move into management.
What clarity might you provide as their leadership coach?
This kind of clarity is transformative. Instead of feeling lost or hesitant, they gain confidence and purpose, knowing exactly what to do and why.
What about health coaches who work with women struggling to lose weight?
Often, these women come to you feeling defeated. They might have tried all the diets and followed cookie-cutter plans that didn’t work for them—or weren’t sustainable. They feel like they’ve failed, and you’re their last hope.
Your job as a coach is to shift their perspective. You help them see that their past struggles weren’t about them failing—they were about not having a plan tailored to their life, challenges, and strengths.
Once you help them gain clarity around a plan that works for their unique needs, their hope, motivation, and belief in themselves come flooding back.
What about moms who’ve put their dreams on hold to put their families first?
These women often need clarity around two things:
Imagine being the coach who says, “Pursuing your dreams makes you a better mom—and I’ll show you how to create 10 to 15 extra hours a week for your passions without putting your family on the back burner.”
Think you’d have a waitlist? You bet.
And, of course, there’s my favorite example: coaches building their businesses.
Too often, I see new coaches trying random strategies on social media, not seeing any traction, and losing motivation. But it’s not about motivation—it’s about clarity.
When coaches don’t have a clear target audience, don’t know how they want to serve them, and don’t have a framework to take clients through, they end up trying everything, hoping something sticks.
Clarity solves this. Once they know their audience, their method, and their best marketing strategy, the motivation comes naturally because they’re making progress.
Now it’s time to turn the mirror around.
Think about your own life and business. Are there areas where you’ve felt a lack of motivation?
Maybe it’s not that you’re unmotivated—maybe you just need clarity.
So here’s my challenge to you: consider the plans or ideas you’ve been stalling on. Ask yourself, Am I clear about what I want and how I’m going to get it?
