How resistant are you?

How resistant are you?

I’ve recently read what I consider to be one of the most important books for female coaches. Steven Pressfield in The War of Art describes resistance and what it does to us, our goals, our work, and our lives if we let it.  To give you a few examples, he tells us that resistance…

  • Is invisible
  • Is internal
  • Is insidious
  • Is implacable
  • Is impersonal
  • Is infallible
  • Is universal
  • Never sleeps
  • Plays for keeps
  • Is fueled by fear
  • Is most powerful at the finish line
  • Recruits allies

Believe it or not, this is not the entire list.  There is more, and more, and more.  If you take the time to think about each chapter as you read it, you’ll understand how resistance has played out in your own life (and in your clients' lives).  You’ll understand all the times you’ve let resistance stop you.  Trust me, you’ll wish you had this understanding years ago.

There is good news.

Pressfield goes on to share his insights on how to overcome, fight, and stomp the hell out of resistance.  As he states in the chapter, Resistance Can be Beaten

“If resistance couldn’t be beaten, there would be no Fifth Symphony, no Romeo and Juliet, no Golden Gate Bridge.  Defeating Resistance is like giving birth. It seems absolutely impossible until you remember that women have been pulling it off, with support and without, for fifty million years.”

He goes on to discuss how to beat resistance and what it means to be a professional versus being an amateur.  This one idea alone is key to being a successful coach. I've seen a lot of coaches not take their coaching practices seriously.

Have you let resistance stop you in the past?  If so, how have you overcome it?  What did you do?

With love & joy,
